Love Series: Awaken Love in His Time
To start of my series on Love, let me take you to the Bible’s book of love. The Song of Songs written by Solomon.

“Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you
by the gazelles and by the does of the field: Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires.”
Song of Songs 2:7
The book of Song of songs is a poetic book that is written in theatrical form it may come up with many interpretations but for me the best picture is that the poem commends the shepherd and the maiden for their devoted love to one another, the maiden is praised for guarding her virtue and her virginity against all the advances of Solomon, because she is saving herself for the one she loves and wants to marry. Yet sexual love is also commended and celebrated in the poem as a gift from God to be celebrated and to praise Him for in the context of marriage.
That more than the love of a man betrothed to me, the gift of love that God gives is a one-to-one love that leaves room for no substitutes; just as the maiden and the shepherd’s love for one another was so strong, that there was no room for her or him to even consider another. The love of my shepherd is more than enough for me.
And of course everybody’s favorite discourse LOVE!
It made me ponder on four main points:
- Love means giving. It’s about submission to one another, the wife submits to the husband as the head of the family and he submits to God who Lord’s over both of them. God has created man and woman of equality BUT of different roles that are of equal significance.
- Love is a strong emotion that should not be treated lightly. It is not something you feel today then the next day its nothing it creates ties between two individuals. So before you even think of it be intentional in considering it through prayer and God’s word.
- Love means loyalty and faithfulness in ALL circumstance. It would have been all too easy for the maiden to give in to the advances of Solomon, betraying her shepherd lover. She would have done no wrong in marrying the king, for she was a virgin. But true love is loyal and faithful, and she could not turn her back on her shepherd. Another thing is that what if the other is no longer loveable would you still stick around? That’s what true love is all about.
- Love cannot be rushed or forced, it takes time to grow and mature. In the advice that the maiden gives to the harem women, this is stressed time and time again throughout the poem; do not awaken love before it is ready.Love that is rushed can result to heartbreak for both individuals, true love is worth the wait.
Love is designed by God because at the first place He loved us first with a love that is unconditional by giving His only Son for our ransom. Do not seek for love, it will come in His perfect time, drown yourself to the love of a never failing savior. Fall in love with Jesus first and let your heart be tucked away in His hand. And as the person that God has betrothed for you falls in love with Jesus. You’ll grow closer and closer to each other and Him being the center and author of a love story that you cannot even imagine.
I am not an expert on love or whatsoever, but the word of the Lord can bring us so much wisdom especially on the topic of love. I am simply a a young woman who experienced His love and wants to share His love to others.
To end, ask yourself is the love of your shepherd more than enough that you will no longer need to look for substitutes?
Lastly, have you experienced the shepherd’s everlasting love?
If not, maybe He is calling you to commune with Him and start a journey that you will never regret.
Much Love,
